Title: twelve golfers
Post by: floyd_page on December 07, 2006, 11:14:19 PM
Twelve golfers need pairings for the winter. (foursomes) After studying some of the scenarios listed (by Ian) it mentioned that a balanced design where all pairs occur 3 times is possible with 11 rounds, but we can't find the pairings schedule any place.  Can you please help
Thanks F Page

Use the Whist schedule for 12 players which you can find by clicking on the schedules link at the top of the page.  For the 11 rounds, foursome 1 is formed from the combination of matches 1 and 2, foursome 2 from matches 3 & 4 and foursome 3 from matches 5&6.  Note that player 12 will always be in the first position of the first foursome, so it would be a good idea to randomise the tee-off times.

The relevant topics that Floyd mentions above can be found here and here.

The twelve "team" round robin works for golf if you are scheduling as partners, however I need to schedule twelve individual players.  If I use the partner chart and pair Match 1&2 for a foursome and so on #one plays in a group with all other players three times in 11 weeks, however 10 & 11 play in the same group 6 times and 6 & 7, 7 times in the same 11 weeks.

I need a solution for 12 golfers over about thirty weeks.

I need to schedule 12 golfers over about thirty weeks in a round robin single format, rotating each player over three tee times as evenly as possable.  All of the solutions I have found are for pairs ie. bridge formats over eleven units with too much duplication in a foursome format.

It's not the case that "10 & 11 play in the same group 6 times" so  I don't think that you can have changed the display at the top to "Whist".  A whist tournament schedules all possible partners once, and all possible opponents twice.  So if you ignore the partnerships and just consider each table as a foursome then every possible pair must appear together exactly three times.  If you are looking at the Whist schedule then 10 & 11 play together in rounds 2, 7 and 9.

I suggest you use three versions of the schedule to build up 33 rounds.  For each set of 11 rounds make different random assignments of your 12 players to the 12 numbers 1 to 12.   Finally you should be able to improve the balance of the tee-off times by swapping some of the foursomes around.

Sorry but I'm not seeing what you discribe.  When I look at the tables I see 10 & 11 in the same group in rounds: 2,3,5,7,8,9,11 further 6 & 7 would be in the same group in rounds: 1,2,6,7,9,& 11, and 5 & 6 play rounds: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 8, & 10 together.  I didn't look at futher combinations.

What you are describing is the standard round-robin tournament for 12 players.  As the schedule page defaults to "cyclic", you need to change it by clicking the box at the top that says "whist".

In case there is something going wrong with your browser then I have pasted the schedule below.

Round 1: 12 1 9 10 2 8 3 6 411 5 7
Round 2: 12 2 10 11 3 9 4 7 5 1 6 8
Round 3: 12 3 11 1 4 10 5 8 6 2 7 9
Round 4: 12 4 1 2 5 11 6 9 7 3 810
Round 5: 12 5 2 3 6 1 7 10 8 4 911
Round 6: 12 6 3 4 7 2 8 11 9 5 10 1
Round 7: 12 7 4 5 8 3 9 1 10 6 11 2
Round 8: 12 8 5 6 9 4 10 2 11 7 1 3
Round 9: 12 9 6 7 10 5 11 3 1 8 2 4
Round 10: 12 10 7 8 11 6 1 4 2 9 3 5
Round 11: 12 11 8 9 1 7 2 5 310 4 6

The schedules page (use link at top) uses Javascript to process the clicks.  dzoch probably had his Javascript turned off.

I need a schedule for 12 golfers playing 8 rounds of golf.  Like everybody to play around the same number of rounds with everybody.
