Title: 8-Team Round Robin with a twist
Post by: Jona on March 18, 2010, 01:42:30 PM
I have 8 volleyball teams.  They are to play each other one time to complete a single round robin.  The twist involves the following:   A host team will have two other teams at one playing site.  Each team will play each team that evening, i.e., 1 vs. 2; 2 vs. 3; 3 vs. 1.  How may dates to I need to complete this format?

Thank you!

I don't think it's possible to make the whole round robin divide up nicely into sets of three matches.  So the best solution will probably be to play 8 rounds in the format you suggest and then have all the teams meet together on the final evening for one match each.

R1 (1  6  3)
R2 (5  4  7)
R3 (6  2  4)
R4 (3  8  5)
R5 (2  5  1)
R6 (8  7  6)
R7 (7  3  2)
R8 (4  1  8)
R9 (1 7) (2 8) (3 4) (5 6)

You could play pairs of rounds (R1 R2) (R3 R4) (R5 R6) (R7 R8) at the same time if there are two or more venues.
