Title: Foursomes in Teams
Post by: casataylor on May 07, 2012, 12:35:03 PM
Hi All,

What a wonderful board! As a former and very untalented Mathematician, my partner asked me to solve the following problem. It intrigues me but I can't seem to find anything which matches it well.

It's a golf tournament (but I would think this could be used for Bridge or Whist too)

- 12 players, from two clubs (6 each). play in foursomes.

- each foursome should have two players from each club

- 5 rounds

- how do I make the best distribution so that there is good distribution both within the clubs and across the clubs

- easy enough to make the "pairs" so that each player is teamed with each of her 5 clubmates once only, but then how to distribute the pairs to have, if possible, everyone play against each opponent at least once, and avoiding too many repeat opponents?

- this seems like the whist distributions, but they all seem to have partners becoming opponents, which isn't allowed here.

- These come up regularly - is there a general method or website?

Thanks for your help!

Phil

Phil,

I don't think any balanced scheme is possible with 12 players.  But if you had 8 per club and four rounds then there is this schedule based on latin squares that might help.
