Title: 6 team bowling league with 2 byes per round
Post by: dirtygaz on March 06, 2013, 09:42:20 AM
we want to run each round in a head to head format, so 4 teams bowl 3 matches/night. But we also want to rotate the byes in such a way so over the course of the season each team bowls against each other the same number of times. I've tried to adapt the cycle algorithm that google linked me to this site with, but wonder if it is just going to make the season way too long. We were hoping for a 10-week duration. Appreciate any assistance on how to calculate this, cheers.

How about the following 9 week schedule?

(6 5 4 1)
(4 6 2 3)
(5 3 2 1)
(1 4 5 2)
(4 1 6 3)
(5 2 3 6)
(2 1 3 4)
(6 2 5 4)
(3 6 1 5)

Where pairs of teams get to play either three or four head-to-heads, but all teams will have had exactly 3 byes.

Then in round ten you need to play the 6 head-to-heads that have only occured three times, these are:

1v2   3v4
1v6   4v5
2v6   3v5

To do this all 6 teams must attend in round 10 getting two head-to-heads each.

Hope that helps.
