I played in a 10 person round robin format "flexible" tennis league.   All 10 players were to setup matches with all the other players.   Wins and losses were recorded.   I won all 9 matches and never lost a set.   The 2nd place person won 5 matches.   The league organizer is now telling me that I have to play a match against the 2nd place person (who I already beat in the round robin play) and the winner of that match is the overall winner.    Does this make sense?

If the plan was to have a play-off match from the start then I think you have to go along with it, but if you didn't know then I can see why you think it's unfair.  The format is used but usually where there is more than one league or group and the top 2 teams from each group go forward to a knockout - for example the World Cup Football.
