This is how I scheduled a 6 team youth soccer tournament. All teams play a minimum of 3 matches and a maximum of 4. Hope this covers your question.
First, divide the teams into 2 divisions of 3 teams each:
Red) A, B, C
Blue) D, E, F
Preliminary rounds (each team plays 2 matches, first day):
Red Blue
AvB DvE
BvC EvF
CvA FvD
Semifinal round (match 3, second day):
Red #1 v Blue #2
Blue #1 v Red #2
Semifinal winners play for championship, winner is 1st, loser is 2nd (match 4 for each team, second or third day)
Consolation rounds:
Red #3 v Blue #3 (match 3 for each team, second day)
Semifinal losers play for 3rd place (match 4 for each team, second or third day)
Hockey and soccer are relatively low scoring matches (opposed to Basketball or American Football) so it we used a formula that would minimize the chances of having to utilize tiebreakers and rewards scoring and, to a lessor extent, a perfect defense.
Draws (ties) prelim round matches will stand.
For prelim standings, wins are worth 6 points and draws are worth 3.
In addition, teams are awarded a point for each goal scored to a maximum of 3.
Finally, a team will also earn a point for a shut out.
Tiebreakers for teams with the same number of points in the preliminary round:
2 Teams:
a) Head to head
b) Goal difference
c) Coin toss
3 Teams:
a) Goal difference
b) Coin toss, odd man out
